ALTO TÂMEGA E BARROSO REGION

Destination Templates

Designing High-Legibility In-Bus Display Systems

JULY 2026

Tasked with defining the visual interface for in-bus destination displays across a regional transit partnership, the goal was to transform raw transit data into a high-impact, instantly readable UI. The project balanced physical display environments, brand alignment, and information hierarchy to earn immediate first-pass client approval.

Project Overview

Designing for public transit requires bridging spatial constraints with immediate visual comprehension. The objective was to turn rapid-glance route data into a cohesive, high-legibility display system.

Designed for Alto Tâmega e Barroso's intermunicipal transit network, these in-bus LCD templates required building a visual identity from scratch. By auditing regional branding and interior bus environments, the layouts were optimized for contrast, legibility, and real-world viewing angles.

The core design strategy focused on establishing clear information hierarchy under tight time constraints. By evaluating dynamic data variables—such as varying route lengths and destination updates—the layout was engineered for effortless horizontal readability. A high-contrast blue palette was selected to seamlessly echo the bus exterior livery, reinforcing brand cohesion between the vehicle’s exterior identity and its interior passenger experience.

The design strategy centered on instant visual legibility, turning transient transit data into a structured layout optimized for passengers in motion.

The design relied on strict visual hierarchy, giving primary focal weight to key destination routes for immediate recognition across the station platform. Typography, line spacing, and contrast were calibrated for stationary wall displays—ensuring effortless scannability from varying standing distances and ambient station lighting.

To ensure swift project delivery within the 3-day timeline, three distinct structural layout variations were engineered for internal stakeholder review. Upon selecting the strongest direction, the final template was presented to the Intermunicipal Community of Alto Tâmega e Barroso and accepted immediately without revisions. The result is a clean, scalable signage system that successfully marries visual cohesion with public utility.
